Is it necessary to use SSL for simple websites?

Well, a simple answer to this question is yes. You need to secure your website with an SSL certificate even if you don’t have online transactions through your website. The reason behind this is that the search engines have become more strict about the non-secure websites.

Any website without an SSL certificate is denoted with HTTP while those with SSL certificates are denoted with HTTPS. Along with this, Chrome and Firefox display warnings about the websites without SSL certificates stating that these websites are not secure.
